Known as the Year Without a Summer, this extraordinary period was caused by the catastrophic eruption of Mount Tambora a year earlier, although nobody at the time knew the true reason. As famine spread and old superstitions resurfaced, a group of writers trapped by the relentless storms at Lake Geneva created Frankenstein and The Vampyre, changing horror literature forever.
