Big Diamond Defense: Stop Giving Away Free Bases
<p>Making the jump to the 60/90 field changes everything about how the game is played. In this episode, we discuss key defensive strategies, positioning, communication, the catcher’s role and the pitcher’s responsibilities. </p><p><br /></p><p>We hope you enjoy!</p><p><br /></p><p>TANDEM RELAY INFO:</p><p>Situation</p><p>Bases empty.</p><p>The ball is hit to the left-center field fence.</p><p>When the outfielder shows numbers, we know this hit is at least a double.</p><p><br /></p><p>Our goal now is simple:</p><p>Do NOT let the double turn into a triple.</p><p>Defensive Responsibilities</p><p><br /></p><p>Left Fielder (LF)</p><p>Fields the ball cleanly off the wall</p><p>Makes a strong, accurate throw toward the cutoff</p><p><br /></p><p>Shortstop (SS) – Primary Cutoff</p><p>Goes out to the outfield grass as the main cutoff</p><p>Gets square to the ball and the target</p><p>Controls the throw and decides where it goes next</p><p><br /></p><p>Second Baseman (2B) – Tandem / Backup</p><p>Trails the shortstop by 10–15 feet</p><p>Backs up the shortstop in case of an errant throw</p><p>Ready to receive the ball if needed</p><p><br /></p><p>First Baseman (1B)</p><p>Watches the runner touch first base</p><p>Trails the runner toward second base</p><p>Gets in position to receive any throw to second</p><p><br /></p><p>Right Fielder (RF)</p><p>Moves in to back up throws to second base</p><p><br /></p><p>Pitcher (P)</p><p>Hustles to back up third base</p><p>Prevents extra bases on overthrows</p><p><br /></p><p>Coaching Emphasis</p><p>Everyone has a job—no spectators</p><p>Hustle and communication matter</p><p>Good positioning turns doubles into routine doubles</p><p>This play is about team defense, not arm strength</p><p><br /></p><p>Goal</p><p>Keep the double from becoming a triple.</p>
