On the 25th anniversary of September 11th, DHS gathers at its St. Elizabeth's headquarters to dedicate Resilience Plaza, a new space built around genuine artifacts of that day, twisted World Trade Center steel, the iconic upright trident, and unbroken limestone recovered from the Pentagon. Deputy Secretary Troy Edgar opens with a deeply personal story of being stranded overseas that morning and losing a close friend aboard one of the hijacked flights, before Secretary Mullen delivers a raw, emotional address on the department's mission, the terrorists arrested under the current administration, and a pointed message about sanctuary cities and national unity. Under Secretary Kavanaugh closes out the ceremony explaining the symbolism behind each artifact, followed by prayers, a moment of silence, and a formal dedication. This one is reflective and mission focused, less political theater and more a genuine look at how the department born from tragedy sees its purpose 25 years later.
