Why is there so much HATE in Star Trek... and other Sci-Fi?

Star Trek fandom can sometimes be a very divisive place. If you've been on the internet for any amount of time, then you certainly know what I’m talking about. But if we really step back and think about it, is the recent rift in Trek fandom so unique? I’m willing to bet history will tell us otherwise.
