Stefan Bate on Why Treatment Isn’t Recovery

In this episode of Finding New Waters, B. Reeves sits down with Stefan Bate, partner and co-CEO of Jaywalker Lodge in Carbondale, Colorado, for a powerful conversation about addiction, surrender, treatment, community, and what long-term recovery actually looks like.

Stefan shares his own journey from being labeled a “chronic relapsor” and “treatment resistant alcoholic” after multiple treatment attempts to eventually finding lasting recovery at Jaywalker Lodge. He explains why he could get an “A in treatment” but still had no idea how to live in recovery — and why the four-month Jaywalker model gave him something traditional 28-day treatment had not: time to actually practice living sober in the real world.

The conversation explores one of Stefan’s strongest beliefs: “you get sober in treatment, but you find recovery in community.” Stefan explains why treatment alone is not enough, why consequence-based motivation eventually burns out, and why joy, relationships, purpose, connection, and a meaningful life are not side effects of recovery — “they are the medicine.”

Stefan also discusses surrender, hopelessness, why intelligent and successful people often try to outthink addiction, the pressure men feel to immediately rebuild their careers after treatment, and why slowing down can actually create a stronger foundation for lifelong recovery.

The episode closes with the newly launched Jaywalker Foundation and its mission to create greater access to extended recovery care for people who need programs like Jaywalker but do not have the financial resources to afford them.

Subscribe to Finding New Waters for more honest conversations about addiction, mental health, treatment, and recovery.

Like the episode, leave a comment with your biggest takeaway, and share it with someone who may need to hear this conversation.

GUEST AND ORGANIZATION LINKS

Jaywalker Lodge

https://www.jaywalkerlodge.com/

Jaywalker Lodge LinkedIn

https://www.linkedin.com/company/jaywalker-lodge

New Waters Recovery

https://newwatersrecovery.com/

ABOUT STEFAN BATE

Stefan Bate is a partner and co-CEO of Jaywalker Lodge in Carbondale, Colorado.
