Issued For Construction AD - NYC Series: Elaine Molinar - Snøhetta

<p>Elaine Molinar is a Partner and Managing Director for the Americas at Snøhetta, the international architecture, landscape, and design practice. Born in El Paso, Texas, she grew up in a household shaped by craft and problem solving. Her father, a pharmacist, was also a self taught woodworker and photographer, and her grandfather had worked in a railroad steel yard, building his own tools. Her mother taught her to sew, embroider, and draw from an early age. Elaine trained seriously in ballet starting at age twelve and received a Ford Foundation Scholarship to attend the San Francisco Ballet School for two summers.</p><p>She began her studies at Texas Christian University, where a history of interiors course, an engineering drawing class taught by an architect, and countless weekends spent at Louis Kahn&#39;s Kimbell Art Museum in Fort Worth led her toward architecture. She transferred to the University of Texas at Austin to complete its five year professional architecture program, and during her studies she completed a professional residency in Los Angeles at the office of architect Barton Myers.</p><p>After graduating, Elaine worked briefly at the Los Angeles firm DeBretteville and Polyzoides. In 1989, she joined a team of friends and colleagues who won the international design competition to reimagine the Bibliotheca Alexandrina, the ancient library of Alexandria, Egypt. That win led her to relocate to Oslo, Norway, joining the newly formed practice Snøhetta, named for a mountain in central Norway. She spent sixteen years there as the firm grew through design competitions, including the Lillehammer Art Museum built for the 1994 Winter Olympics.</p><p>In 2004, Elaine helped establish Snøhetta&#39;s New York studio, the firm&#39;s second office, to lead its work on the National September 11 Memorial pavilion at the World Trade Center site. Under her leadership, the studio grew from a handful of people to a firm with seven offices worldwide and approximately 250 employees. Her recent work includes the shade canopy and courtyard redesign at the University of Texas at Austin&#39;s Blanton Museum of Art and the STEAM discovery center in her hometown of El Paso.
