Shackleton’s Endurance: The Crew That Refused to Die in Antarctica

In nineteen fifteen, Ernest Shackleton’s ship Endurance was trapped and crushed by Weddell Sea pack ice before his Imperial Trans-Antarctic Expedition could even reach the Antarctic coast. Twenty-eight men were forced from a protected wooden vessel onto moving sea ice, with three lifeboats, tents, limited food, navigation instruments, salvaged equipment, and no way to call for help. This episode follows the documented survival of the Endurance party: months drifting on floes, failed attempts to drag boats across broken ice, rationing, seal and penguin hunting, illness, frostbite, and the loss of the expedition’s dogs when food could no longer support them. The rescue took months and several failed attempts before Luis Pardo’s Chilean tug Yelcho reached the stranded men. Every Endurance crew member survived, but the wider expedition carried a separate cost.
