For the 16th Academy Awards, our nominees chiefly explore how the war impacted the lives of those at home, how communities (be they a ship's crew, Spanish guerilla fighters, or ordinary people in the heart of America) respond to violence, and the individual sacrifices required to build a better tomorrow.

One clear voice in a room can change everything, whether that voice belongs to an anti-fascist resistance leader, a woman determined to better understand the world around her, or even a barely educated French peasant girl.

Can any of these movies surpass one of the most beloved classics of all time?

Probably not, but one of them might get way closer than expected.
