X Minus One was NBC's great science fiction anthology, made in cooperation with Galaxy magazine and counting down into the void every week with stories by the finest writers in the field. In this March 1956 broadcast, adapted by George Lefferts from Fritz Leiber's classic, a passing dark star has torn the Earth away from the sun. The air itself has frozen and fallen as snow, and a boy's nightly chore is to carry a pail out into the endless black cold and bring back a load of frozen oxygen so his family can breathe. Then, out in the dark beyond the Nest, he sees a light moving — and a face.
