She was found hours later in room 21, robbed, raped, and stabbed to death, with a $20 bill tucked under the band of her watch.</p><p>Anthony Darrell Hines had checked into room 9 that morning. Days earlier, he&#39;d told his girlfriend&#39;s mother why he carried a hunting knife under his shirt: &quot;I never go anywhere naked. I always have my blade.&quot; By that afternoon he was on the interstate in Catherine&#39;s Volvo with dried blood on his shirt and a story that changed every time he told it.</p><p>Madison walks JT through the stab marks in the motel wall, the confession Hines offered only if the state would guarantee him execution — then retracted when they said yes — and the affair-shaped red herring that had the Sixth Circuit rethinking the whole case 35 years later.</p><p>Anthony Hines is scheduled to be executed Thursday, August 13, 2026.
