Episode 30 : The Zorg with Siddharth Kara

In this episode, I sit down with Siddharth Kara, Pulitzer Prize finalist and New York Times bestselling author of The Zorg: A Tale of Greed and Murder That Inspired the Abolition of Slavery.

In late 1780, a Dutch slave ship called the Zorg set sail for the coast of West Africa. Running low on supplies, its captain threw more than a hundred enslaved Africans overboard. When the ship's owners filed an insurance claim for their losses, the case ended up in a British courtroom. For the first time, a single question cut through the brutality of the slave trade: were the Africans on board people, or cargo?
