The West Bengal government has made the singing of Vande Mataram mandatory before classes in all state-run and state-aided madrassas, triggering political controversy in the state. Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari announced the move during an official visit to a monastery, extending an earlier directive that made the national song compulsory in government-run schools. 

Meanwhile, Hamza Burhan, one of the masterminds of the 2019 Pulwama terror attack, was shot dead by unidentified gunmen in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir.

Separately, India and the African Union have postponed the India-Africa Forum Summit in New Delhi due to the evolving Ebola-related public health situation in parts of Africa and ongoing consultations over participation and safety concerns.
