<p>Uber is cutting 93 workers from its Washington offices — hitting its Seattle engineering hub the hardest, eliminating software engineers, product managers, and data scientists. CEO Dara Khosrowshahi's memo blamed runaway corporate complexity, but the more honest answer is simpler: Seattle made those employees the most expensive workers in the country to keep on payroll.</p><p>The culprit is the Jumpstart payroll tax — the levy Seattle imposed to punish large employers — stacked on top of Washington's layered tax burden. When Uber needed to find headcount to cut, Seattle was the obvious first line. You build a policy designed to make employment expensive, you get fewer employees.
