The Secret History of Demonology

<p>Demonology is the historical effort to describe, confront, and explain hostile spirits. This episode follows that effort from Mesopotamian protective objects and ancient spirit traditions through Greek daimones, Jewish and Christian writings, medieval theology, handwritten grimoires, witchcraft prosecutions, Catholic exorcism, nineteenth-century illustration, and the modern occult revival.</p><p><br></p><p>At the center are the books that gave demonology its distinctive form: the Testament of Solomon, the Key of Solomon tradition, Johann Weyer&#39;s Pseudomonarchia Daemonum, the Lemegeton or Lesser Key tradition, the Malleus Maleficarum, the Rituale Romanum, and Collin de Plancy&#39;s Dictionnaire Infernal. These texts assigned spirits names, ranks, offices, seals, and supposed powers, while often claiming authorities much older than their surviving manuscripts.</p><p><br></p><p>The episode examines a persistent historical contradiction. Theologians, physicians, clergy, judges, skeptics, collectors, ritual practitioners, and printers repeatedly recorded knowledge they often regarded as perilous.
