Born in 1938, the former optometrist abandoned conventional life to embrace extreme minimalism, trading material wealth to live on walking paths with only essential gear.</p><p><br></p><p>In 2021, he gained widespread acclaim by becoming the oldest person to thru-hike the 2,200-mile Appalachian Trail at age 83.
