Lonely at the Yard: When You Don't Feel Like You Belong
You can be surrounded by horses and people and still feel completely alone.
In this episode of Over the Oxer, we explore what it's like when your yard simply isn't your community.
This episode was inspired by a listener who is finding her yard lonely. There are other people around her, but they don't feel like her sort of people. Moving yards isn't a realistic option, with many yards in her area having closed, and there isn't a riding club nearby.
In the UK, we might instinctively suggest joining a riding club or finding a riding buddy. But what happens when those obvious solutions aren't available?
We explore:
🐴 Why being surrounded by people doesn't necessarily mean you feel connected
🐴 The difference between fitting in and belonging
🐴 Why your yard doesn't have to provide your entire social life
🐴 How to protect your mindset when you don't particularly click with the people around you
🐴 Finding equestrian connections outside your immediate yard
🐴 The value of online communities and friendships
🐴 Why loneliness can sometimes turn into self-doubt
