President Trump just signed an order renaming Lake Ontario to Lake America — and he says it’s official, effective immediately. After talks with Ottawa collapsed, Trump put 50% tariffs on $20 billion of Canadian goods and said Canadian officials are “nasty people” who charge American farmers 400% tariffs. The order directs Interior to put Lake America on U.S. maps and in the federal naming system. Trump’s claim: The deepest water and most of the volume sit on the American side. He cannot make Canada use the name. Prime Minister Mark Carney rejected it. New York’s governor says the state will not comply. Then Trump floated the next line: With a gulf and a lake, maybe the Atlantic or the Pacific is next.
