The Fansplainers – Obsession

Hello, movie maniacs!

This week David and Mary are preoccupied by the surprise hit Obsession, written and directed by YouTube sketch comedian Curry Barker. You might even call it a fixation.

It’s become a meme machine, is still in theatres after a May release and has made over $500 million on its $750, 000 budget.

Speaking of obsessions, these are the sorts of numbers that fascinate Hollywood, which, in Dave’s view, is going to be knocking on the doors of many a YouTube creator looking for that next horror hit.

With that in mind, Mary and Dave also discussed Kane Parsons Backrooms with Chiwetel Ejiofor and Renate Reinsve, which has made almost $400 million on a $10 million budget.

Dave is calling it the YouTube-ification of horror films and we’ll have to wait and see if his predictions become a sort of reality.
