THE FAMOUS COTE LAKE UFO PHOTO!!!

The 1971 Lake Cote UFO photo is often described by UFO researchers as one of the most compelling photographs of an unidentified flying object ever captured. Taken accidentally on September 4, 1971, over Lago de Cote in northern Costa Rica, the image came from an official aerial survey conducted by Costa Rica’s National Geographic Institute for a hydroelectric project. Flying at approximately 10,000 feet, the survey aircraft carried a large, high-resolution mapping camera mounted beneath the plane. Cartographer Sergio Loaiza and the crew reported seeing nothing unusual during the flight, but when the film was developed, Frame 300 contained a distinct disc-like object over the landscape. The object was absent from photographs taken immediately before and after, making the mysterious image particularly intriguing.

The photograph has remained controversial for more than five decades and has been examined by researchers including Jacques Vallée and Richard Haines, with debate continuing over what the object actually represents. Its importance comes largely from the circumstances under which it was taken: this wasn't a tourist trying to photograph a UFO, but an official mapping mission using professional photographic equipment and film decades before digital manipulation. Renewed interest has followed the release of higher-resolution scans of the original negative and the documentary The Cote Photo, from filmmakers Adam Pillon and Megan Woomer, which revisits the photograph, its history, and testimony from Loaiza. More than 50 years later, the Lake Cote image remains an enduring piece of UFO history—and one photograph that continues to challenge researchers searching for a definitive explanation.
