Ep. 57 | Til Death Didn't Us Part: Ghost Marriage
This week, Elizabeth and Erica are joined by their third sister, Regina, for a deep dive into one of our strangest topics yet: people who marry ghosts and the dead.
We start with the wild story of a woman who says she fell in love with, and eventually married, a Victorian soldier’s ghost. There were candlelight dates, a paranormal wedding, celebrity spirits on the guest list…and eventually, even a ghostly divorce.
But marrying the dead isn’t always a paranormal love story. We also explore real traditions and legal practices surrounding posthumous marriage, including ghost marriages in China and the rare circumstances in which a person can legally marry a deceased partner in France.
And because there are three sisters at the table this time, Regina joins the conversation with a psychological perspective on relationships with unseen partners—how grief, attachment, loneliness, identity, belief systems, and our own minds can shape experiences that feel completely real.
Is it love after death? A cultural tradition? A coping mechanism? Something paranormal? Or maybe a little more complicated than any of those?
Pour a glass and join all three sisters for ghosts, psychology, marriage, cultural traditions, questionable relationship choices, and the important question nobody asked us to answer:
Can you marry a ghost?
