What Christians Need to Know - The Book of Enoch: EP 1

The Book of Enoch is one of the most controversial ancient Jewish texts connected to the Bible — quoted directly in Jude, preserved for centuries in Ethiopia, and discovered among the Dead Sea Scrolls. But there is something most discussions about Enoch leave out: 1 Enoch isn't actually one book. It is five separate compositions collected under one name. And when archaeologists recovered Aramaic fragments of Enoch from the caves at Qumran, they found evidence for four of those five sections. One was missing. In Episode 1 of our four-part Book of Enoch arc, Bennett Tanton examines what 1 Enoch actually is, where it came from, how it survived, why early Christians debated it, why most churches ultimately rejected it from the biblical canon, and why the Ethiopian Orthodox Church preserved it as scripture. We trace the story from the mysterious disappearance of Enoch in Genesis 5 to the Dead Sea Scrolls, James Bruce's return from Ethiopia in 1773, the Aramaic manuscripts discovered at Qumran, and Jude's direct quotation of Enoch inside the New Testament. We also tackle one of the biggest misconceptions surrounding the text: Quoting Enoch does not automatically make Enoch scripture. But Jude's quotation does establish something significant — Enochic traditions were known and taken seriously within the Jewish world surrounding early Christianity. And then there is the missing section. The Book of Parables, chapters 37–71, contains a heavenly figure repeatedly called the Son of Man — an enthroned judge associated with glory, judgment, and pre-existence. That is also the one major section of 1 Enoch that has never been recovered at Qumran. That question will become one of the central issues of this series.
