בפסוק "ומל ה' אלקיך את לבבך ואת לבב זרעך" [רביעי פ' נצבים] יש שייכות גלוי' לחודש אלול – ד"את לבבך ואת לבב" ר"ת אלול. בר"ת זה לא נכללו התיבות שבתחלת הפסוק "ומל ה"א", כי תוכן העבודה דחודש אלול מתבטא בד' תיבות אלו דוקא. והביאור: העבודה דתומ"צ, ובפרט עפ"י הדגשת תורת החסידות, הוא להביא האדם לידי ביטול. וזהו גם החידוש דחודש אלול, דגם כאשר עוסקים בענינים של "שדה" מרגישים מציאותו של המלך ומתבטלים בפניו. ולכן התחלת הר"ת של "אלול" הוא דוקא ב"את לבבך ואל לבב" כי "את" מורה על נקודת הביטול, וכמחז"ל "את – הטפל לבשרו". ולא משנה כ"כ כיצד בא למצב הביטול ("ומל ה"א") אלא הפועל ממש שעומד בביטול. אלא שאח"כ צריך להמשיך ביטול זה בכל כחות הנפש, וזה נפעל באמצעות הלב – "לבב". ואח"כ מוסיף האדם ופועל המשכת הביטול גם בכל עניני העולם שמסביבו – "ואת לבבך". ו"ח"י אלול" מוסיף חיות, שהו"ע עיקרי, בעבודה זו.

Synopsis

In the verse “Hashem your G-d will circumcise your heart and the heart of your offspring” (in revi’i of parashas Nitzavim), the initial letters of the words “your heart and the heart of” (את לבבך ואת לבב) spell the word Elul. The acronym begins with the word es (rather than the first part of the verse, “Hashem your G-d will circumcise”) because es connotes bittul, which is the goal of the service of Elul – to attain a bittul to Hashem even when one is occupied with matters of the “field.” What matters here is not so much how one arrives at this state of bittul (“And Hashem will circumcise”), but the fact that one stands in a state of bittul. The bittul must then be circulated to all the faculties of the soul (which is done through “your heart,” which circulates the blood to the entire body), and then into the heart of everything in a person’s environment (“and the heart of”). And Chai Elul infuses this service with vitality.
