I was working the front desk, reading a tattered paperback under a buzzing fluorescent light, when a man walked in smelling of rain and juniper. He wanted a room, but he didn't want to sign the register. When I insisted, he wrote a name I didn't recognize—until I looked it up in the old logbook from 1972.
