The Night the Motel Clerk Found the Name in the Register at the Ponderosa Lodge
It's the summer of 1997, just past three in the morning at the Ponderosa Lodge outside Flagstaff, Arizona. I was working the front desk, reading a tattered paperback under a buzzing fluorescent light, when a man walked in smelling of rain and juniper. He wanted a room, but he didn't want to sign the register. When I insisted, he wrote a name I didn't recognize—until I looked it up in the old logbook from 1972. That's when I saw the same name, same handwriting, same date: June 14. And beside it, in the column for checkout: Did not depart. This is the story of how I learned that some guests never leave.
