You have seen it a thousand times. A Trump supporter says something vicious. Cruel. Deliberately provocative. They mock a deportation. They laugh at someone losing their healthcare. They celebrate federal agents brutalizing people in the streets. They say it loud, in public, with zero hesitation and zero shame.

Then you push back. And they completely fall apart.

Suddenly they are shocked. Suddenly they are offended. Suddenly you are the problem. Whatever happened to civility? Aren’t you supposed to be the tolerant ones? How dare you speak to them that way.

They spent years dishing it out. And the moment someone sends it back, they cannot handle it.

How the Asymmetry Works

Asymmetric norm enforcement operates on a simple principle. The rules only apply in one direction. One group gets to violate every norm of civil behavior, honesty, decency, and democratic participation. The other group is expected to absorb it, tolerate it, respond politely, and never retaliate with the same energy.

This asymmetry is not accidental. It is manufactured. And Trump is the person who manufactured it at scale.

Trump demonstrated over a decade that you could say the most vicious things imaginable, attack anyone by name on a public stage, mock a disabled reporter on national television, call for violence at rallies, threaten to jail political opponents, and face zero consequences. Not just zero consequences from the legal system. Zero consequences from his own supporters. They cheered every violation. They rewarded every cruelty. They treated every norm he shattered as evidence that he was strong enough to say what everyone else was thinking.

His followers watched that and learned. If the leader can do it and nothing happens, then the rules do not apply to us either. They internalized the asymmetry. They are allowed to be cruel. You are not allowed to push back. Those are the rules. And anyone who violates those rules is the aggressor.
