623 Si Short - The Jack Knives
Si Short from the Jack Knives is my guest this week. He grew up in England, moved to the States at 22, and now lives in Southern California. He took 10 years off from bands, started writing again in Hawaii, and the Jack Knives grew out of Thursday night jams into a fully independent band playing House of Blues and the Fillmore.
We get into building a following brick by brick instead of buying followers, what streaming data tells you about where to play, why live streams reach a totally different audience, and how the band balances tours with day jobs and families. Si also explains why he pushes the band to promote a record for a year instead of three months, and tells the story of getting his bass player turned away at the Canadian border before a Vancouver show.
The new Jack Knives album, Negative Spaces, is out November 6 on Fumie Records, produced by Pete Steinkopf of the Bouncing Souls. This fall they play shows with Dave Hause and The Mermaid, headline dates in Germany, Austria and England, and a run with the Bouncing Souls, the Flatliners and Suicide Machines.
