Episode 34: Weaponized Wildfires

In this episode, I open with thoughts on the wildfire crisis in the Pacific Northwest, focusing on the Grasshopper Fire near Mt. Hood and the devastating fires around Spokane. I reflect on what’s changed over time, why these fires feel different than they once did, and how forest policy, bureaucratic incentives, arson, and public narratives all factor into the story. From there, I connect the wildfire discussion to a broader frustration with institutional explanations, especially the way political and media systems frame complex events while ignoring deeper structural causes.

I then pivot into a wider meditation on media, podcasting, and audience trust. Using Ted Gioia’s argument about “audience capture” and Netflix’s struggles as a jumping-off point, I contrast extractive platform models with value-for-value podcasting and explain why long-form audio still matters. That leads into reflections on No Agenda, the impact of John C. Dvorak’s passing, and why conversational audio can create a level of intimacy and learning that video and ad-saturated media often can’t.
