They'll Use Your Past Against You

Paul had a complicated past. Before he was a follower of Jesus, he hunted down Christians — he didn't just disagree with them, he had them killed. So when he shows up preaching freedom in Christ, the obvious move for his opponents was to use that history against him. And it worked, at least on some people. How could you trust a man like that?

Paul's response is striking. He doesn't minimize it. He doesn't explain it. He points to it directly and says: I was the best at sinning against God — nobody did it better. And that's exactly why you should listen. Because if Jesus can do that in me, the argument about what he can do in you collapses.

When you find freedom in Jesus, the same thing tends to happen. People in your life — friends, family — will bring up your past. Sometimes with suspicion, sometimes with mockery, sometimes with genuine confusion. The instinct is to distance yourself from who you were. But that instinct is wrong. Your past isn't something to escape — it's evidence. Every bit of wreckage behind you, every mistake you can name clearly and without flinching, is an argument for what Jesus does in a person when they genuinely meet him.
