El Nino Sea Level Rise: A Foot by October

Hour 3 (9.11) A slow planetary wave is pushing up the coast and will raise California sea levels about a foot by mid-October — roughly what the last hundred years of rise added, all at once.

8:05 — A coastal Kelvin wave that started at the equator hit South America and turned north at about six miles an hour. By mid-October it should put California water levels 10 to 14 inches above normal, and one UC Santa Cruz researcher notes every 2 to 4 inches of sea level doubles the flood risk for communities built at sea level. This El Niño is forecast to be the strongest since at least 1950. The warm water is already dragging Baja species north — hammerheads off Malibu, mahi-mahi and oversized yellowtail in water that never sees them.

8:20 — Tim Lynn spent 30 years in law enforcement and flew for the Huntington Beach PD Air Unit before he became KTLA's Sky5 pilot-reporter. On 9/11 the FAA grounded everything civilian in the country and left the sky to military, police and medical flights. He remembers what Southern California looked like from up there with nothing else flying, LAPD running pursuits below, and CHP working the coordination.
