Jay Sapovitz grew up close to his father, spending much of his childhood around sports and racetracks. By 13, Jay had started gambling. Before long, gambling wasn't simply something he did—it had begun swallowing his identity. He worked constantly to fund it, surrounded himself with older gamblers, and eventually chose UNLV as his college destination while already deep in an addiction he couldn't yet see clearly.

By his early twenties, Jay had reached a devastating bottom. Sitting alone in his parents' basement, he realized he could no longer keep living the way he had been living. The turning point came when he finally did something addiction had made incredibly difficult: he told the truth.

Jay made his last bet on March 6, 1997, and walked into his first recovery meeting four days later.

But this conversation isn't simply a story about quitting gambling.
