Sam Bush grew up the first-born son on a sheep farm in WA's Stirling Ranges before his family moved to Perth. Sam joined the army and after Kapooka and Singleton he joined 4RAR (Commando), serving in Charlie and Alpha Company and deploying to East Timor in 2001.
