Understanding West Point Branching: Branch Night, OML, BRADSO, and Branch Detail

The host of Behind the Long Gray Line and guest Carlys explain West Point’s branching process and the Firstie-year milestone of Branch Night in Eisenhower Hall, when cadets open envelopes to learn their Army branch. This evening is often filled with mixed emotions. They describe how cadets gain branch exposure through training, Branch Week, CTLT shadowing, and mentors. The Cadets submit ranked preferences, interviews , and letters of recommendation. The discussion contrasts the former OML-only model with today’s talent-based accessions that also considers branch rankings and other factors. They define BRADSO (committing to eight years active duty to improve chances for a branch) and branch detailing (serving first in one branch, then transitioning). Using 2026 branch distribution numbers, they discuss “force branching,” debunk rumors about gaming the system, and offer parent advice on supporting cadets through disappointment while respecting their choices.

For more in depth information on branching go to the landing page on the West Point website (link below) for more information about branching and to locate the YouTube video.

https://www.westpoint.edu/military-education/branch-education
