今天这集想跟大家讲讲有趣的历史故事。今天美国将近 30% 的 GDP，来自几个不到 200 年前都曾经属于墨西哥的州。包括全美经济最大的 California，第二大的 Texas，还有 Arizona、New Mexico、Nevada、Utah。光是 California 跟 Texas，今天加起来就占了美国 GDP 超过 23%。

所以换个角度想：今天美国差不多每四块钱的经济产出，就有超过一块来自这两个以前曾经属于墨西哥的地方。

但如果我们把时间倒回不到 200 年前——这些地方根本都不是美国。

这场战争只打了不到两年，从 1846 到 1848。但打完之后，墨西哥失去了超过一半的国土，而美国的版图则一路延伸到 Pacific Ocean。

After gaining independence from Spain in 1821, Mexico controlled a vast territory that included much of today’s American Southwest. Many American settlers moved into Texas, but conflicts over culture, political autonomy, and slavery eventually fueled the Texas Revolution. Texas became an independent republic in 1836 and joined the United States in 1845. A border dispute and President James K. Polk’s expansionist agenda helped trigger the Mexican-American War in 1846. After Mexico’s defeat, the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo transferred a huge amount of land to the United States. The war reshaped both countries, intensified the debate over slavery, and left a lasting Mexican influence on the culture of the American Southwest.
