Psalm 30: Mourning Turned to Dancing

This is a psalm written by a man who has been to the bottom and come back, and he wants you to know exactly what it felt like. "Weeping may endure for a night, but joy cometh in the morning." That single line has carried more people through more dark nights than perhaps any other sentence in the Bible, and its power lies not in sentimentality but in specificity. It does not say weeping will never come. It says weeping endures for a night — one night, not forever. David had been prosperous and thought himself unmovable, and then God hid his face and everything crumbled. But the crumbling was not the end. The end was dancing. "Thou hast turned for me my mourning into dancing: thou hast put off my sackcloth, and girded me with gladness." Notice that God does not merely remove the sackcloth — he replaces it with something. The closet is never left empty. And the gladness has a purpose: "To the end that my glory may sing praise to thee, and not be silent." The man who begged God not to be silent now vows never to be silent himself.
