COINTELPRO: When J. Edgar Hoover Declared War on Dissent

The FBI ran a secret program for 15 years that targeted civil rights leaders, student protesters, and anyone J. Edgar Hoover considered a threat. They forged letters to start gang wars. They sent Martin Luther King Jr. a package telling him to kill himself. They helped plan Fred Hampton’s assassination. All of it illegal. All of it hidden from the public until a group of activists broke into an FBI office and stole the proof. This is COINTELPRO, the government program that proved your worst fears about federal overreach were actually understatements.
