Leonard, Juanna, Otter, and their companions are forced to participate in a nightmarish coronation ceremony deep within the sacred amphitheater. Juanna and Otter, elevated as the "Mother" and "Child" gods, are placed high upon the colossal idol overlooking a vast crowd. Below them, the priests prepare human sacrifices — including the terrified king Olfan — while the monstrous "Snake," a gigantic ancient crocodile, waits in the seething waters beneath the idol.

Juanna alone understands the language of the People of the Mist, and she quickly realizes that the priests intend to kill Leonard, Francisco, the Settlement men, and Olfan. What follows is one of Haggard's most gripping scenes: Juanna's brilliant, fearless speech to the people, Leonard's deadly rifle shots from the idol's hand, and the sudden collapse of Nam's authority.

Chapter 24 continues the tension as the group escapes the temple through the hidden passage, reunites with Olfan's soldiers, and returns to the palace. The night ends with uneasy alliances, new dangers, and hints of the rubies they still seek — but also the growing suspicion that Nam, the high priest, will not accept defeat quietly.

⭐ CHAPTER 23 — "How Juanna Conquered Nam" Key Events The moonlit amphitheater fills with thousands as Nam proclaims Juanna and Otter the returning gods Aca and Jâl.

Two women are presented: one as the Snake's bride, the other as a doomed sacrifice. The latter is hurled into the whirlpool and devoured by the monstrous crocodile — "the head alone was broader than the breast of the biggest man."

Nam orders further sacrifices, including Olfan and the white captives.

Juanna intervenes with a powerful speech, declaring the old law abolished and a new era of peace. She crushes the red lily of sacrifice and places the white lily of mercy on her breast.

Leonard, acting on Juanna's secret signal, shoots the priest preparing to kill Olfan.

A second priest attempts to seize Leonard and is also shot, falling from the idol to his death.
