Iron and Myth 54: The Gospel According to Godzilla

CHAOS IS one of the great enemies of God. And there is no greater depiction of chaos on a movie screen than Godzilla.

Christians can use Hollywood’s portrayal of kaiju—giant monsters—to open serious discussions of the Bible is our regular Iron and Myth panel: Dr. Judd Burton (BurtonBeyond.net), author of Interview With the Giant; Doug Van Dorn (DouglasVanDorn.com), author of Battle for the Bible’s Truth: Genesis, Jesus, and the Second Century Plot to Deny the Messiah; and Brian Godawa (Godawa.com), best-selling author of Daniel: Exile in Babylon, the first novel in a trilogy about the life of Daniel.

We discuss the biblical symbolism of chaos monsters like Leviathan and Behemoth, their representation in mythology and movies, and their theological significance. In particular, we focus on the new series of Godzilla movies by Legendary Pictures in which Godzilla and his monstrous colleagues are rebranded as “Titans—the original and rightful rulers of earth.”

If you’ve followed us for any length of time, you know we generally agree that the Titans of Greco-Roman myth (i.e., religion) are the “sons of God” from Genesis 6:1–4 who, like the Titans, are confined in the bottomless pit—Tartarus (2 Peter 2:4).
