Ephesians 1:3-65. Okt.43 Min.

This week on Beyond the Message, Jake, Michael, and Sam discuss yesterday’s message in the book of Ephesians, focusing on Paul’s teaching about God’s sovereign grace in choosing and predestining His people. How do God’s sovereignty and human responsibility fit together? And why does Paul tell us what God was doing before the foundation of the world? We explored what it means to be chosen and predestined in Christ, why salvation leaves us with no room for boasting, how difficult doctrines should lead us toward surrender, and how understanding God’s work of salvation fuels a life of humility, gratitude, obedience, and worship.

We study the Bible carefully, just as we teach it carefully on Sundays. Take time during the week to work through the steps in our Ephesians Series Bible Study Guide to prepare for Sunday's teaching. We believe studying the text in advance can help you get more out of this series.

Message Highlights:

Main Point: God’s work of salvation fuels our work of worship.

God has blessed His people with every spiritual blessing in Christ. Paul begins not with something Christians need to accomplish, but with everything God has already accomplished for them—choosing, adopting, redeeming, forgiving, giving an inheritance, and sealing His people with the Holy Spirit.

Our salvation is entirely an act of grace. We don't deserve to be chosen, adopted, redeemed, forgiven, or made heirs with Christ. Grace means God's favor isn't earned or conditioned upon something worthy in us.

God chose His people before the foundation of the world. God's choice precedes our existence and anything we could do. The sermon argues that Paul is speaking of God sovereignly choosing individual believers rather than merely choosing Christ or choosing the church as an undefined group.

God's sovereignty and human responsibility are both biblical truths. Scripture teaches that God is sovereign over salvation while also treating human decisions, repentance, faith, and obedience as meaningful and morally responsible. We may not fully comprehend how those truths fit together, but we shouldn't reject one because we struggle to reconcile it with the other.

Our limited understanding should produce surrender rather than suspicion of God. The triangle/circle/cone illustration emphasized that two truths can
