After consulting for the food industry, he realized overeating is a biological issue rather than a psychological one. He discovered the solution involves understanding brain biology instead of focusing solely on self-love.

The Reptilian Brain Response

The reptilian brain handles survival impulses and can override rational thought during perceived emergencies. Modern life creates constant stress that tricks this primitive brain into a state of alarm.

Food companies exploit this by providing small justifications that allow the reptilian brain to take over. Once these excuses take center stage, the rational brain steps aside and allows impulsive eating to occur.

The Inner Pig Method

How did Livingston regain control? He created non-negotiable rules and identified the internal voice that tries to break them. He calls this voice the inner pig to help separate the impulse from his actual identity.

This separation provides a few critical microseconds to make a conscious choice instead of purely reacting. By viewing the craving as a separate entity, you stop negotiating with it and maintain your rules.

Biology and Decision Fatigue

Many people relapse because of biological dysregulation caused by lack of sleep, dehydration, or skipping meals. Decision fatigue also depletes the willpower needed to resist the reptilian brain's survival messages.

Livingston recommends stabilizing biology with regular meals before attempting complex dietary changes. Establishing a steady nutritional foundation makes it much easier to manage the psychology of eating.
