Tracy Tully spent a career in the roughest schools in Australia, and she taught on both sides of 1995, the year corporal punishment ended in Queensland state schools. She caned children. The ones she caned still stop her in the street. Ask her whether it should come back and the answer is not the one you expect. This one is a Man Cave, so Luke Bona and Adam MacDonald get there sideways. It starts with dumb phones, a 20 cent yo-yo now worth 700 dollars, and Adam's theory that everyone is just trying to buy their youth back. It lands on what happens to boys who grow up without a man in the house who gets them. Adam's answer is one teacher, a jiu jitsu coach, and week on week off with a mother he never stopped getting along with. Tracy's answer is the story at the centre of this episode.First day at a school out west, brief of two words: fix it. By five o'clock she had expelled the six worst boys in the school, and by five o'clock she had a plan for them. Her family ran shearing teams. She asked for six men she could absolutely trust. The boys went into the sheds for six weeks with no phone, no alcohol and no drugs, running at dawn, learning how to fix a tap, sitting around a campfire at night having the conversations nobody had ever had with them. Every parent signed. Every boy stayed at school. She gave each of them a shearer's singlet and they wore it into town like a uniform. Most of them are still in the game. Also in this one: Book Week costume bans, school uniforms as the great leveller, the student who was allowed to identify as a cat and drink milk from a saucer while Adam's son got pinged for wearing a hoodie, Adam's own father walking into a police station, and a 1965 Humphrey B. Bear that is about to go in the post.Guests: Tracy Tully, author of FEARless Buckle UP Build ResilienceHeads up: this episode discusses the corporal punishment of children, a ten-year-old being assaulted, a father striking his teenage son, threats made against a family, and two deaths. It contains strong language.Support: Kids Helpline 1800 55 1800 (24/7) - Lifeline 13 11 14 (24/7)00:00 Cold Open: "It Didn't Damage Them Too Much"00:11 Welcome Back To The Man Cave00:33 Why Everyone Is Buying Dumb Phones Again01:48 The 20 Cent Yo-Yo Now Worth 700 Bucks02:39 Tracy Tully Joins Us04:05 The Kids Growing Up With No Male Role Model05:28 Adam On Raising Wonder Boy Week On, Week Off06:26 The One Teacher Who Actually Gets You07:27 Army Brats And Fathers Who Did Not Bend10:03 The Creek Bed, The Cliff And The Sister Who Cried10:45 Wonder Boy Found The Bible11:57 Two Years In The Army, A Lifetime Of Hospital Corners14:16 Single Sex, Coed Or Private: Does It Matter?16:32 What Girls Did To The Toughest Boys In School18:17 "Fix It, Tracy": Day One At A School Out West21:00 Six Boys Gone Before Five O'Clock21:45 "I Need Six Mentors"23:21 Six Weeks, No Phones, No Drugs, Up At Dawn25:03 The Singlet That Became Their Identity26:03 The Coach Who Said The One Thing That Landed28:22 The Flood, The Department And The Cost To Her Family33:36 Book Week Bans And Harry Potter35:20 Uniforms: The Great Leveller36:35 A Tail Is Fine, A Hoodie Is Not38:17 "I Identify As My Yellow Wheelie Bin"40:17 Bring Back The Cane?
