October 2001. The Pines Motel outside of Coal Creek, Pennsylvania. I was working the night desk when a man in a green coat checked in. He paid cash. He did not want a receipt. He did not want a key. He asked for room twelve, which was boarded up. I explained it wasn't available. He said it was. By the time I looked up from the register, he was gone. That night I learned that some rooms rent themselves, and some guests never leave. This is not a ghost story. It's a story about a door that should not have opened, and a coat that still hangs in the back of my closet.
