Luna tells the story of a winter night in 1998 when she helped her aunt, a funeral home director in Ridgewood, with an unusual preparation. A woman had died in her sleep, peaceful and young, but when Luna saw her, the body seemed wrong—the mouth slightly open, the fingers curled, as if mid-sentence. Then she noticed the stitches on the inside of the lip, neat and black. Her aunt said it was standard procedure. But that night, Luna heard a faint whisper from the cold room, a voice saying the same two words over and over. She never went back. A quiet, unsettling episode about what the dead might try to say and what we do to keep them silent.
