The Shoe at the Edge of the Goodwin Hollow Road, April 1998

April 1998. A single sneaker on the shoulder of Goodwin Hollow Road, two hours outside of town. Luna was driving home when the headlights caught it—white fabric, blue trim, laces still tied. She pulled over because something about it felt wrong. Not the shoe itself, but the way it was sitting. Pointed toward the treeline. Perfectly dry on a morning when the ditches were still wet with dew. She picked it up. It was warm. Inside the shoe was a note, printed on lined paper in careful block letters: 'I am still walking. Please don't tell anyone where you found this.' Luna took the shoe home. She has never told anyone where she found it. But sometimes—late at night—she hears footsteps on the gravel outside her window, and she wonders if whoever wrote that note is trying to find their way back to the shoe. Or if they are trying to find her.
