1167: Wies de Boevé on Bottesini, Bow Technique, and Musical Problem-Solving

1167: Wies de Boevé on Bottesini, Bow Technique, and Musical Problem-Solvingvorgestern58 Min.

Wies de Boevé is a soloist, teacher, and principal bass of the Tonhalle-Orchester Zürich, after a decade with the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra. Through performances and recordings, he champions the double bass and its repertoire, especially the music of Giovanni Bottesini.

We discuss Wies's performance of Bottesini's F-sharp-minor Concerto in the Conductors' Academy closing concert, why the concerto is often misidentified as Bottesini's first, and how Wies chooses under-recorded works to bring back into view. He also reflects on switching from French to German bow, problem-solving in practice and teaching, what he looks for in students, and balancing a musical career with family life.

Enjoy, and be sure to give Wies a follow on Instagram!
