In early January 2008, police searching a dumpster and nearby van north of Atlanta found blood-soaked clothing, weapons, restraints, and evidence connected to missing hiker Meredith Emerson. The man cleaning that van was Gary Michael Hilton.

What followed exposed a 75-day killing spree across national forests in Georgia, North Carolina, and Florida. This episode of Disturbing History examines Hilton's life, the murders of Meredith Emerson, John and Irene Bryant, and Cheryl Dunlap, and the evidence that finally brought him down.

It also looks at several other unsolved disappearances and murders where his name has surfaced over the years, while separating proven facts from speculation.Hilton was ultimately sentenced to death in Florida and multiple life sentences elsewhere.

Years later, he publicly confessed to killing Cheryl Dunlap after previously denying prosecutors could prove the case.
