More Than “Just a Symbol”

More Than “Just a Symbol”25. Sept.17 Min.

If baptism and communion don’t save us, why did Jesus command them?

In this Extra Shot of Grace in the Grind, Cody Hudson digs deeper into baptism and the Lord’s Supper—and why reducing them to “just symbols” may miss much of what Christ gave His Church.

Christians can fall into two ditches.

One turns baptism and communion into rituals that somehow save us.

The other becomes so afraid of ritualism that practices Jesus explicitly commanded begin to sound almost optional.

Scripture gives us something better.

We’ll talk about:

• Why Cody holds to believer’s baptism • The New Testament pattern of faith and baptism • What Romans 6 says baptism points to • Ordinances, sacraments, and “means of grace” • Why communion is more than private remembrance • Who should come to the Lord’s Table • Why struggling with sin is not the same as refusing to repent • Why online communion raises important questions • Why baptism and the Lord’s Supper belong to the gathered Church

Baptism does not save you.

Communion does not save you.

But that does not make either one insignificant.

Baptism points to our union with Christ—His death, His resurrection, and our new life in Him.
