Episode 64 - Protect Colorado’s Hunting and Fishing Heritage | Salida Gun Shop

Colorado’s hunting future depends on more than buying a tag and heading into the field.

Josiah Nierman and Adam Nelson, co-owners of Salida Gun Shop in Salida, Colorado, believe protecting the hunting and fishing heritage means getting involved long before opening day.

What began as a local firearms retailer has grown into a community hub for hunters, shooters, and outdoor enthusiasts, built around practical experience, quality gear, and a commitment to Colorado’s outdoor traditions. Nierman and Nelson explain why their business supports the constitutional right to hunt and fish, and why they believe hunters and anglers can no longer afford to sit on the sidelines.

The conversation explores the growing debate over wildlife management, the role of Colorado Parks and Wildlife, and the importance of science-based conservation decisions. They discuss concerns surrounding state wildlife commission meetings, proposed hunting restrictions, and the lessons hunters should take from other states, including Oregon. They also explain why constitutional protections matter even when hunting and fishing are already legal, and how those protections can help preserve opportunities for future generations.

Beyond the politics, this is a conversation about the responsibilities that come with being an outdoorsman. From supporting responsible wildlife management to making your voice heard at public meetings and encouraging fellow sportsmen to get involved, Nierman and Nelson offer a clear message: conservation requires participation, not just a license purchase.

Whether you hunt Colorado’s mountains, fish its rivers, or care about the future of America’s outdoor heritage, this discussion offers a compelling look at what it takes to protect the traditions we hope to pass down.
