Dolly Parton died last week at 80, and she may literally be the last universally loved person we’ll ever see. This is the whole story: the girl born in a one-room shack in the Smoky Mountains with no electricity and 11 siblings, who wrote her first song at five, played the Grand Ole Opry at 13, and moved to Nashville the day after she graduated high school (where she met her husband of 60 years at a laundromat, on her first ever go at a washing machine). The Porter Wagoner years, 'Jolene', the resignation letter that became 'I Will Always Love You', '9 to 5', Dollywood, and the quietly enormous philanthropy: the Imagination Library that has given away over 330 million books, the Moderna vaccine money, the children's hospital that now carries her name, and the fact she was secretly a producer on 'Buffy the Vampire Slayer'. Musical genius, business brain, and possibly the most generous person in American entertainment history. Also a great flirt.
