Vale Mary Gaudron, Australia's first female High Court judge
Mary Gaudron has died at the age of 83, a giant of the Australian legal profession. She was a woman of many firsts: the first woman to sit on the Australian High Court, the first to hold the rank of a federal court judge, the first to be appointed Solicitor-General anywhere in the Commonwealth, the first woman admitted to the NSW Bar in 1972. Her colleague John Basten AO KC, former judge of the NSW Court of Appeal, remembers a formidable figure, who leaves a lasting legacy.
