How to Survive the Early Years of Building a Business | Operator Standard Q&A - EP 318
I got on an open forum call with a room full of operators and told them to ask me anything, no script, no filter. The very first question hit the thing almost nobody talks about: how do you survive the early years of building a business without burning out or losing your family in the process. Seven years in, with four young kids at home, I've lived every version of that grind, so we went straight there.
The first operator is five years in with a four year old, a two year old, and a three month old, working sixteen hour days on six hours of sleep, and he's struggling to be present and patient when he finally gets home. My answer came in a few parts: get down to eye level and actually focus, because a little real presence feels like hours to a kid. Remember that almost nothing is a true emergency, in the hospital we learned 99% of the time no one dies in the next hour, so that text can wait. Leave your phone in the car and take the armor of work off before you walk in the door. And protect your sleep and health like the business depends on it, because it does.
From there we get into the stuff operators actually wrestle with. Broken, interrupted sleep and whether it's really hurting you. How to stop being the bottleneck and build the SOPs and systems that let you scale with a team instead of doing everything yourself. How to carve out a niche and stand out in a heavily regulated market where everyone plays by the same rulebook. And the discipline of saying no, why I stopped saying yes to anything that doesn't move my business or my family forward.
If you're an operator, a founder, or a tradesman deep in the hardest early years, this is a long, honest Q&A full of the things I wish someone had told me when I started.
