It is entirely in the בית, ממלאה את כל הבית, up to the roof, with less than a טפח between it and the קורות.</p><p>So טומאה בתוכה makes the בית טמא, but with טומאה בבית, what is inside it stays טהור, שדרך טומאה לצאת ואין דרכה להכנס. We had this יסוד in פרק ג׳ משנה ז׳, with a sewer pipe under a house, and in פרק ד׳ משנה א׳ and ב׳.</p><p>The question is which case our משנה is most like. The רא״ש compares it to the sewer pipe: טומאה in the pipe makes the בית טמא, but טומאה in the בית leaves the pipe טהור. In פרק ד׳, with the מגדל, the רא״ש explains that since it is covered with a נסר, it can be מציל, and the טומאה in the בית does not go in.</p><p>The תפארת ישראל learns that our כוורת has a דין כלי, and a כלי can be מציל עם דפנות האהל. Since the כוורת reaches the roof, or is within a טפח of it, it counts as עם דפנות האהל, so it is חוצץ and מציל on what is inside. But טומאה inside goes out, even from something מוקף צמיד פתיל, and is מטמא the בית. Those are two פשטים in the משנה.</p><p>Next, בין עומדת בין מוטה על צדה: the same applies if it lies on its side with its פה within a טפח of the house&#39;s wall, which fits the last פשט. And בין אחת בין שתים: one כוורת on top of another, with less than a טפח between them.</p><p><br></p><p><strong>Mishnah Ohalos 9:10</strong></p><p><strong>משנה אהלות ט׳:י׳</strong></p><p>הָיְתָה עוֹמֶדֶת בְּתוֹךְ הַפֶּתַח וְאֵין בֵּינָהּ לְבֵין הַמַּשְׁקוֹף פּוֹתֵחַ טֶפַח, טֻמְאָה בְתוֹכָהּ, הַבַּיִת טָהוֹר. טֻמְאָה בַבַּיִת, מַה שֶּׁבְּתוֹכָהּ טָמֵא, שֶׁדֶּרֶךְ הַטֻּמְאָה לָצֵאת וְאֵין דַּרְכָּהּ לְהִכָּנֵס:</p><p><strong>Synopsis from R&#39; Shloimie</strong></p><p>We explain that here the כוורת stands in the doorway, within a טפח of the משקוף. Unlike משנה ט׳, טומאה בתוכה leaves the בית טהור, because we view the משקוף as closing its opening.
